July 3rd, 2008
Okay, I know it is actually July 8th and my 33rd day on the East Coast. But, let me fill you in on what I did July 3rd.
Not only was it a short week because July 4th was on a Friday but I, also, got out of the office around 3:30pm because business buildings in DC close at 3pm the day before a holiday. Probably, so that everyone can have more time to funnel out of the city. To my surprise Thursday morning when I checked my phone messages I recieved one from Martha. She invited me to join her and her two daughters for dinner and a musical. That musical just so happens to be the hit of the summer at the Kennedy Center. We went to the Watergate Restaurant for dinner followed by the Broadway production of the "LION KING"! The magical performance was great fun for kids and adults alike. The costumes were magnificent, the actors' voices were clear and brilliant. The colors, the dancing, the songs were all amazing. I am so fortunate I got to enjoy the "Lion King" as my first performance at the Kennedy Center.
To make things even better the following day was the 4th of July! I think everyone should spend one Independence day in WA DC. My roommates and I woke up and went and watched the reading of the Declaration of Independence at the National Archives. All the American flags and men dressed up in colonial war uniforms playing "America The Beautiful"really made for a patriotic atmosphere. Not to mention the crowds of people.
Afterwards we headed back to my townhouse for a bbq celebration. We had friends come over that afternoon even Archita's and my friend Max got in to town from Seattle! He has come to enjoy WA DC and its sights for a week and find out why Archita and I love this place so much.
Around seven a group of us walked down towards the Washington Monument. It started to rain and so we found refuge under a Museum's overhang for a bit. Luckily, it stopped raining and we continued our quest for the best fireworks spot. Around 8:45 we had found it! Standing on top of the WA Monuement hill overlooking the Lincoln Memorial (right where the display would spring from) we were able to watch the show! It was a terrific ending for a perfect Independence Day.
July 5th my friends and I had fun walking around Georgetown and taking in the sights at Georgetown University. We even checked out the lecture halls and chapel on campus. On the way to the University Archita told us we were walking up the flight of stairs they had filmed for the movie, the "Exorcist". That evening we all went to Old Town, Alexandria to walk the boardwalk again and ate dinner at one of the many neat pub-style restaurants.
July 6th "Mamma Mia! Here I go again..."
That's right on Sunday two of my roommates, Max and I went and saw the musical "Mamma Mia" at the National Theater. Another fantastic musical that I thoroughly enjoyed. I continue to have songs from the "Lion King" and "Mamma Mia" in my head and will not be surprised if they stay there all summer long.
That evening after dinner and a stroll down Georgetown we saw Pixar's "Wall-E"! As an avid pixar follower I have not found one that I do not like. They hit another homerun with "Wall-E" (it is a great date movie) and I am excited to see what more comes from the Pixar team group.
To top the night off we set out to see the monuments at night! World War 2 Memorial, Vietnam War Wall, Lincoln Monument. I don't think anyone can ever get tired of looking at all these beautiful monuments and buildings. They represent a powerful significance to our country and remind us everyday of the people who stood up for this country and that we should do the follow in their footsteps.
July 7th
Monday, that means back to the office I go. After work I got to go to the National Zoo. There I saw red pandas for the first time, so cute! For dinner I ate at my first ever Hard Rock Cafe! The rock'n restaurant was hopping and had the food to match. I ordered a Cobb Salad and a chocolate milkshake. Max got their burger special (it even had an onion ring on it) and got a Hard Rock glass souvenire with his milkshake.
On the way home we passed the Ford Theater and across the street the building Lincoln died in after he was shot. So much history in this place to think about and take in. I can never get enough of it.
